Wildlife artist Joshua Spies, of Waterton, South Dakota, has been named the winner of the 2009 Federal Duck Stamp Contest.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2009-2010 federal and junior duck stamps will officially go on sale June 26. The service will be hosting its First Day of Sale at the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World retail store in Nashville, Tenn.

The Federal Duck Stamp features artwork of a long-tail duck and decoy painted by wildlife artist Joshua Spies of Watertown, S.D. The Junior Duck Stamp has a painting of a single wood duck by 16-year-old artist Lily Spang of Toledo, Ohio, according to The Outdoor Wire.

"In 1934, an innovative partnership between waterfowl hunters and the federal government created the Federal Duck Stamp Program to help provide funds for waterfowl conservation," said Rowan Gould, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service acting director. "A lot has changed since that time, but this mainstay program continues to succeed thanks to many dedicated and valued partners—from hunters to stamp collectors to conservationists, the U.S. Postal Service and private corporations such as Bass Pro Shops."

All waterfowl hunters 16 and older are required to purchase and carry the Federal Duck Stamp while hunting.
