South Carolinians will get a 48-hour firearms tax break beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The “Second Amendment Weekend” will allow shoppers to buy rifles, handguns and shotguns without paying 9 percent in sales tax. Ammunition and accessories will remain taxable.

South Carolina legislators tried to make the tax-free event a part of the state’s law last year by adding it on to a tax break amendment for energy efficient appliances. The state’s Supreme Court threw out the legislation in May because of an unrelated energy amendment according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

This year’s holiday was added as a one-time break in the state budget for consumers. State economic officials estimated it would cost the state about $15,000, the Winston-Salem Journal said.
